In recognition of recent events in our nation's K-12 schools, it is more important than ever that school administrators understand the strengths – and limitations – of the keying technologies they employ, and understand the importance of incorporating a comprehensive keying strategy into any hardware changes. Overlooking this critical element can put students and educators at risk if access is available to persons with mischievous, or worse, malicious intent.

School administrators have a responsibility to ensure that their school keying system meets basic security requirements, and can use these guidelines as part of an overall security strategy.

BASIC KEY POLICY GUIDELINES

• Keys should only be given to employees with a legitimate reason for entering the school, and records should be kept of all key-holders.
• All keys and keyblanks should be accounted for, noting any that are lost, stolen, etc. Lost keys require either immediate rekey or, if electronic keying is used, immediate removal of the key from the system (preferred method).
• Key systems should have a valid utility patent in order to protect against unauthorized duplication. Without a patent, even with "do not duplicate" on the key, unauthorized duplication can occur.
• Key systems should be capable of providing audit for compliance to various state and federal requirements on sensitive areas such as student recods, medical supplies, testing rooms and others.
• Any EAC opening should utilize override cylinders and keys capable of providing audit data.

Medeco X4 is the most economic and efficient solution. Medeco X4 has one of the largest master key capabilites on the market. This allows facility managers to tie everything together under one key for ease, convenience and efficiency. Additionally, Medeco X4 easily retrofits into existing systems so installation time is minimal.

Medeco X4 is the perfect security upgrade for small format interchangeable core (SFIC) installations for Best-style, Prox and iClass systems. In addition to SFIC cylinders, Medeco X4 is available in many other styles of retrofit cylinders and can be keyed into a single system.
